Triage Criteria
Updated 2026-08-10
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Triage is a decision rule for when demand exceeds supply: each case is assessed quickly on fixed, operational dimensions such as severity, urgency, and treatability, assigned a grade, and routed to a matching processing lane. Its purpose is to replace subjective reaction with a standard, so that scarce resources flow to the cases where they are most needed and most effective, and the loudest claimant does not set the order.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Fix the dimensions: grade on severity, urgency, and treatability, never on loudness. - Route by grade: send each case to a lane with a matching response time. - Re-triage: re-grade cases on a schedule because conditions change.
Anchor fast decisions
When demand exceeds supply, triage replaces a queue ordered by who complains hardest with a queue ordered by expected benefit per unit of resource. Grading on fixed dimensions makes that ordering auditable and reproducible, which is what allows the decision to be defended afterward.
