CORE DEFINITION
Bateson's schismogenesis describes how interaction between groups cumulatively amplifies differences through positive feedback. In symmetrical escalation both sides mirror and outdo each other, like an arms race or a shouting match; in complementary escalation one side's dominance provokes the other's submission and the gap widens. Without an intervention the loop has no internal dampening and runs toward collapse.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Name the loop: identify which escalation type is running, symmetrical or complementary. - Break the pattern: take one counter-move such as humor, candor, or a pause. - Add a brake: agree a rule or a third party who can stop the escalation.
Anchor fast decisions
Each side's behavior is the input to the other side's next move, so a small difference is amplified on every cycle instead of being averaged out. Because the loop has no internal dampening, the only exit is an action that breaks the pattern from outside the cycle.
