SCQA

CORE DEFINITION
SCQA is a four-part structure for business writing and storytelling: Situation, Complication, Question, and Answer. It is used mainly at the opening, where the writer fills in the shared background, introduces the conflict that disrupts it, converts that conflict into the question the reader now holds, and only then delivers the answer. Because the conflict creates a gap the reader wants closed, attention is captured before the recommendation arrives, and the answer addresses something the reader is already asking.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use opening draft: fill in the four SCQA slots before writing any of the body. - Use tension test: check that the complication is sharp enough to hold attention. - Use reader question: confirm the answer addresses the question readers are already holding.
Anchor fast decisions
Ordering the material as situation, complication, question, and answer first builds consensus background to lower resistance, then uses conflict to open a cognitive gap that makes the audience ask the question themselves, so the answer is genuinely wanted. It follows the natural sequence of receiving information, a problem first and a solution second, which holds attention better than flat exposition.
