SCQA

CORE DEFINITION
SCQA is a narrative structure with four parts: Situation establishes background the audience already accepts; Complication introduces the change or pain that disturbs it; Question crystallises the resulting issue; and Answer delivers the recommendation. Leading with the answer triggers resistance because listeners have not yet felt the problem, whereas the sequence of shared ground, disruption, and question makes the answer feel necessary. It matches the order in which people naturally accept information.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use shared-ground opener: state the background that the audience already agrees with. - Use complication pivot: introduce the disruption that makes the current status quo untenable. - Use question bridge: phrase the core issue so your answer is the obvious response.
Anchor fast decisions
The structure uses narrative tension from consensus to conflict to question to answer. Shared background lowers resistance, then a complication opens a cognitive gap that makes listeners generate the question themselves, so the answer arrives when it is wanted. This follows the order in which people receive information: first a problem, then a solution.
