CORE DEFINITION
The Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) compares alternative strategies by scoring each one against the key internal and external factors identified in earlier analyses. Each factor carries a weight, typically derived from an internal factor evaluation and an external factor evaluation. Every strategy receives an attractiveness score on each factor, usually from one to four, indicating how well that strategy responds to it. Multiplying the weight by the attractiveness score and summing produces a total per strategy, and the highest total is preferred. Subjective inputs still drive the result.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use factor weighting: carry the weights from the internal and external evaluations rather than inventing new ones. - Use attractiveness scoring: rate each strategy on how well it responds to each factor. - Use total comparison: compare weighted totals across strategies instead of arguing from preference.
Anchor fast decisions
Strategic debate tends to be settled by advocacy, since competing proposals are usually argued in different terms and cannot be compared directly. Scoring every strategy against the same weighted factors puts them on a common scale, which makes the comparison explicit and forces the advocates to state which factors they consider decisive. The resulting total is a defensible ordering for discussion, but it inherits the subjectivity of the inputs, so a weak factor list produces a precise-looking number that reflects the analyst.
