INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION

The PERFORMANCE model is a systematic framework for diagnosing why performance falls short. It treats performance as a function of many interacting factors rather than of individual capability alone, covering areas such as skill and knowledge, motivation and incentives, environmental support, tools and resources, information and feedback, and timing. The diagnostic procedure is to examine each factor in turn, identify which one is the binding constraint, and intervene there. The common reflex of attributing poor performance to attitude or ability usually misdiagnoses problems originating in the system.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Use factor inventory: list every factor that could affect the performance before judging the person. - Use bottleneck search: score each factor and find the weakest one rather than intervening everywhere. - Use matched intervention: choose the fix that addresses the identified factor instead of defaulting to training.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Attribution tends toward the person, because individual behavior is visible while structural causes are not, so the same failure is read as a capability problem even when the process or tool is at fault. Enumerating the factors makes the invisible ones visible and forces a comparison rather than a first impression. Because the binding constraint determines the outcome, training aimed at motivation cannot help when the constraint is a slow system. Matching the intervention to the diagnosed factor is what makes the remedy work.
