KWHLAQ

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
KWHLAQ extends the KWL strategy with three additional prompts. Know asks what the learner already knows. Want asks what they want to know. How asks how they will find the answers, which adds method awareness to the original sequence. Learned asks what they have learned. Action asks what they will do with it, which orients the process toward application. Questions asks what new questions have emerged, which keeps inquiry open rather than closing at the summary. The extension assumes the KWL sequence ends too early, since it produces an account of learning without connecting it to method, use, or further inquiry.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use method prompt: state how you will find the answers before starting the search. - Use action prompt: name one thing you will do differently with what you learned. - Use question prompt: record the new questions the work produced and carry them into the next cycle.
Anchor fast decisions
The original sequence moves from prior knowledge to goal to summary, which organizes a single reading but leaves the learning disconnected from how it was obtained and what it is for. Adding the how prompt makes the method explicit, so the learner can judge whether the chosen source was adequate. The action prompt forces translation into use, which is where transfer happens. The question prompt prevents closure, so the output of one cycle becomes the input of the next and inquiry compounds.
