CORE DEFINITION
KFD is a framework for setting learning objectives across three dimensions: Knowledge, what the learner needs to know; Feeling, the attitude or disposition the learner needs to develop; and Doing, what the learner needs to be able to perform. The three correspond respectively to the cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of the learner. The framework's premise is that training which addresses only knowledge produces learners who can describe correct practice without adopting it or performing it. Each dimension also requires a different assessment: recall for knowledge, attitude measures for feeling, and performance checks for doing.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Use three-column objectives: write what learners must know, feel, and do before designing any content. - Use assessment matching: pick an assessment that measures each dimension rather than testing knowledge for all three. - Use gap diagnosis: identify which dimension current training neglects and add activities for it.
Anchor fast decisions
Knowledge, attitude, and skill are acquired through different processes, so instruction that only transmits information changes only the first. A learner can pass a knowledge test while retaining the belief that the practice is unnecessary and the inability to perform it under pressure. Writing objectives across all three dimensions forces the design to include activities that produce attitude change and rehearsal, since neither follows automatically from understanding. Matching assessments to dimensions then makes the gap visible, because a knowledge test shows success even when performance has not changed.
