CORE DEFINITION
DIEP is a four-step reflective structure made of Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Plan, used to turn an experience into learning that can be interpreted, assessed and acted upon. Based on the Boud 1985 reflection model, its four steps ask the learner to objectively describe what happened, interpret what it means and why, evaluate its value and shortcomings, and plan how it will be applied in future. It is the standard structure commonly used for academic reflective writing.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Describe the facts only: always keep the first step purely objective and free of judgment. - Interpret before judging: extract the real meaning before you ever rate the value. - End with a concrete plan: the reflection remains unfinished without a next action.
Anchor fast decisions
Based on the Boud 1985 reflection model, the four steps of Describe, Interpret, Evaluate and Plan construct meaning out of experience, which is why the structure is standard for academic reflective writing.
