INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
CIGAR is a structured framework for coaching conversations. C stands for Current reality, the situation as it stands now. I stands for Ideal, the outcome the client wants to reach. G stands for Gaps, the distance between the current reality and that ideal. A stands for Action, the steps taken to close the gap. R stands for Review, how progress is tracked and evaluated. The model keeps coach and client focused on identifying the gap and concentrating attention on concrete actions that close it, rather than lingering on discussion of the problem itself.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Pin down the present: describe the current reality in concrete, observable and honest terms. - Define the ideal: state the desired outcome clearly so the gap becomes truly measurable. - Attack the gap: choose specific actions that directly close the measured distance.
Anchor fast decisions
Built on gap focus. Current reality, the ideal, the gap, action and review shift the conversation away from the problem and onto the specific actions that close the measured distance between the two.
