Circle of Safety
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The primary responsibility of a leader is to establish a boundary within which members feel safe and trusted, and do not need to expend energy defending against internal attacks (office politics), thereby focusing all their energy on external challenges.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Team cohesion. If your team is busy blaming each other or CC'ing emails for evidence, the circle of safety is broken. Repair trust first, otherwise any incentive mechanism is ineffective.
Anchor fast decisions
The leader establishes a boundary, within which members feel safe and trusted, and do not expend energy defending against internal attacks (politics, blame-shifting), thereby focusing energy on external challenges. If the circle of safety breaks, trust collapses and mechanisms fail.
