A4

CORE DEFINITION
The A4 method is a personal writing practice in which a landscape sheet is filled in about a minute: the title goes in the top left, the date in the top right, and four to six lines of text in the body. The aim is not a polished document but an external dump of whatever is occupying the mind, so that working memory is freed for the task at hand. Speed is essential, because a one-minute limit prevents editing and self-censorship. Sheets are then filed and reviewed rather than discarded.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Dump fast: write for one minute without stopping to correct or polish. - Cap the length: keep the body to four to six lines on a single sheet. - Review later: file the sheets and revisit them so the dump becomes usable.
Anchor fast decisions
Unfinished thoughts occupy working memory and keep intruding on whatever task is at hand. Writing them down externalises the content, and the brain stops rehearsing what it no longer needs to hold. The one-minute limit matters because it suppresses editing and self-censorship, which would otherwise turn the exercise into composition and slow the release. The fixed small format also lowers the barrier to starting, so the habit survives on busy days.
