Netflix 4A

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The 4A model splits responsibility between the two parties in a feedback exchange. The giver must aim to assist, meaning the feedback serves the recipient or the company rather than the giver's irritation, and must be actionable, specifying what to change. The receiver must appreciate the feedback by listening, and then may accept or discard it. Explicitly granting the receiver the right to decide is what makes candour tolerable.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Check the motive: confirm the feedback genuinely serves the recipient before delivering it. - Make it actionable: state clearly what should change rather than what is wrong. - Grant the decision: let the receiver choose freely whether to adopt the suggestion.
Anchor fast decisions
Candour fails in two opposite ways: people stay silent to avoid friction, or they speak carelessly and cause damage. Requiring a helpful motive and a concrete action removes the second failure, while giving the receiver the right to decide removes the perceived threat behind the first. The exchange then carries information without either side having to defend its standing.
