CORE DEFINITION

Linguists want to study how people speak in natural, unobserved conditions, but the only way to collect data is to observe them. Once observed, people change their speech (becoming more formal or unnatural).

Meta-interference in data collection. This is more general than the Hawthorne effect. Any survey (interview, questionnaire) yields the 'side the respondent wants to show' rather than the 'natural side'. To obtain authentic data, non-intrusive (invisible) observation methods must be employed.
