A Boltzmann brain is a self-aware entity that arises from random fluctuations in entropy, due to an extremely rare departure from thermodynamic equilibrium. This theory is a thought experiment in physics. For example, in Newtonian mechanics, theoretically, all atoms could, by bouncing and combining with another atom, assemble by pure chance into a functioning human brain (although on average, the time required would be longer than the lifetime of our current universe). Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann published a theory in 1896: the observed universe is always in a highly improbable state of disequilibrium, because only in such a state can a brain exist to observe the universe. For Boltzmann's 'Boltzmann universe' hypothesis, there is an opinion: the most common thermodynamic fluctuations overall are as close to equilibrium as possible; therefore, by any reasonable criterion, in a Boltzmann universe, the number of brains surrounded by countless neighboring stars would be vastly outnumbered by 'Boltzmann brains' existing alone in an empty universe. Around 2002, the Boltzmann brain gained new relevance in other fields.
