Total Institution
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A closed social space (such as a prison, monastery, or psychiatric hospital) where a group of people live a closed, regimented, and uniform life under the authority of a single administration. Such an environment can thoroughly reshape or even destroy an individual's self-identity (deindividuation).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The environment's rewriting of personality. Be wary of organizations that attempt to take over all aspects of your life (such as certain closed boarding schools or high-pressure companies). If you lose external connections and private space, your self can be completely consumed by the institution.
Anchor fast decisions
Goffman's 'total institution' closed space, where members' lives are entirely arranged by a single authority, daily routines are homogenized and isolated from the outside world, leading to the reshaping of self-identity by the institution (deindividuation).
