CORE DEFINITION

The abstract syntactic representation of a sentence that determines its meaning; the surface structure is the actual spoken or written form. The same deep structure (e.g., "I love you") can be transformed into multiple surface structures ("I love you", "You are loved by me"). Scaffolding role: See through the surface to the essence.
