Raman Scattering
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When light passes through matter, the vast majority undergoes elastic scattering (frequency unchanged), but a very small fraction (one in ten million) undergoes inelastic scattering, with a change in frequency. This change carries information about the internal vibrations of the molecule (fingerprint).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Identify the essence from subtle deviations. Most feedback (elastic scattering) is ineffective pleasantries. Only the very small amount of signal with changed frequency (unexpected feedback, slight modulation) carries the true internal information of the other party (molecular fingerprint).
Anchor fast decisions
Raman scattering is a phenomenon where light undergoes inelastic collision with molecules, causing a frequency shift. The shift corresponds to the molecular vibrational energy levels, enabling non-destructive identification of substances. It is the physical basis of Raman spectroscopy.
