Archaeology of Knowledge
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
It does not concern itself with what "truth" is, but rather, like excavating fossils, it excavates the stratigraphic rules by which knowledge is produced. That is: in a given era, what kind of discourse is allowed to be called "true"? Who is qualified to speak?
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The desacralization of truth. When an expert says "this is science," look at it with an archaeological eye: this is merely a product of 21st-century discursive rules. In another era (e.g., the Middle Ages), the rules for generating truth were completely different. This allows you to maintain a prudent distance from current authority.
Anchor fast decisions
Foucault proposes that we do not ask "what is truth," but rather examine "in a given era, what discourse is permitted by rules to be called truth, and who is qualified to speak it." Truth is a product of discursive practice, evolving with the episteme rather than being eternal.
