CORE DEFINITION
The Greek word Pharmakon means both 'remedy' and 'poison', as well as 'scapegoat'. Derrida uses it to deconstruct binary oppositions: writing is both a remedy for memory (preserving records) and a poison for memory (causing forgetfulness). Things often contain both opposing attributes simultaneously.
