War Machine
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A force that is external to the state apparatus, fluid, nomadic, and decentralized. It is not necessarily actual war, but a pure capacity for difference and becoming. The state attempts to capture the war machine (turning it into an army), but the war machine always tends to escape and create new spaces (such as hacker culture, avant-garde art).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The nomadic nature of innovation. Truly disruptive innovation often comes from the 'war machine' (nomads) outside the system. Large companies (the state), if they want to remain vital, must tolerate and even support these unruly nomadic tribes at the margins, rather than trying to fully discipline them.
Anchor fast decisions
Deleuze and Guattari, in 'A Thousand Plateaus', propose that the war machine is a nomadic, decentralized, fluid force of becoming that is external to the state (the state apparatus). Its essence is to create new spaces and differences, not to destroy enemies. The state attempts to capture and discipline it into an army; but the war machine tends to escape and continues to generate at the margins. This explains why disruptive creation often comes from outside the system.
