Subsidiary Awareness
Updated 2026-08-08
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Michael Polanyi distinguished focal awareness, which attends to the target, from subsidiary awareness, which monitors the hammer's handle, the body, and internalized rules without being looked at directly. Skill means moving rules out of focal and into subsidiary awareness; if you must think about where your feet go, you cannot yet dance. Forgetting the rule is the condition of using it well, because attention that drops back onto the instrument breaks the very act it serves.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Target sorting: separate what is the target from what should run quietly in the background. - Trust the ground: keep attention on the outcome and let trained skill carry the means. - Temporary recall: lift a subsidiary item to focal only to troubleshoot, then release it.
Anchor fast decisions
Subsidiary awareness holds tacit, unverbalizable knowledge of instrument and body and funnels it toward the focal target without competing for attention. Forcing any part of it into focal awareness splits the act, and the smooth integration that skill built collapses.
