After staring at a bright light or vivid color for a period of time, when you look away, an image of that light or its complementary color still appears in your visual field. This is a rebound after the depletion of photochemical substances in the retina.

Cognitive lag afterimage. When we have just experienced an intense era (such as a period of rapid growth) and enter the next era (a period of stability), our cognitive retina still retains the 'afterimage' of the old era. This causes us to fail to see the true colors of the present and misjudge the situation.
