Functional Differentiation

CORE DEFINITION
In Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory, modern society is functionally differentiated into subsystems such as economy, law, politics, and science, each with its own binary code: economy pays or does not pay, science is true or false, law is legal or illegal. The systems are autonomous and mutually irreplaceable: money cannot produce truth and power cannot define law. The key condition is that each sphere follows its own logic.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Code identification: name the internal logic of each domain before intervening in it. - Separation respect: refuse to let one logic such as money govern academia, family, or art. - Code translation: when crossing boundaries is unavoidable, translate rather than force unity.
Anchor fast decisions
Luhmann argued that modern society differentiates into subsystems each operating on an exclusive binary code, and that these codes cannot substitute for one another. Because money cannot produce truth and power cannot decide scientific validity, a single logic imposed everywhere scrambles the codes and the systems lose their function.
