CORE DEFINITION

How to distinguish science from non-science (pseudoscience, metaphysics)? Popper proposed the criterion of "falsifiability." If a theory cannot be refuted by any possible observation, it is not science.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

A security gate for cognition. When faced with a new theory (such as astrology, psychoanalysis, certain grand narratives), ask: "What evidence could prove you wrong?" If the answer is "impossible to be wrong" or always finds a way to explain away, then it may be interesting, but it is not science; do not give it the weight of science.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

A core issue in the philosophy of science. Popper used "falsifiability" as the demarcation criterion: only what can be refuted by potential observations is science. The mechanism is "testability = fallibility" — a theory that cannot be wrong is unfalsifiable and carries no information.
