Degeneracy
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Different structures, same function. In organisms, completely different genes or neural circuits can produce the same physiological function. This differs from redundancy (identical backups); degeneracy provides higher adaptability—when one mechanism fails, another can compensate, and it can cope with different environmental pressures.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Diversified backups. In team building, do not just look for 'backups' (two identical people), but for 'degeneracy' (people with different backgrounds who can solve the same problem). This way, when facing unknown crises, the team's survival rate is higher.
Anchor fast decisions
Refers to multiple different states corresponding to the same observable result (degeneracy), or information being compressed into fewer representations; reminds that the same phenomenon may have multiple causes.
