Disenchantment / Entzauberung

CORE DEFINITION
A concept introduced by Max Weber to describe the trajectory of Western modernization. As science, calculation, and bureaucratic organization displace religious and magical explanations, the world becomes in principle masterable through technical means, and mystery loses its place. Weber treated this as a loss as well as a gain: the same rationalization that produces control also produces a meaning vacuum and the iron cage of impersonal rules. The process is not simply the disappearance of belief but the reorganization of authority around calculability. Contemporary reactions often take the form of re-enchantment, the attempt to restore significance within a rationalized world.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Rationalization scan: notice where a process has replaced a judgment and an indicator has replaced a purpose. - Meaning check: ask what significance is lost when the metric becomes the goal. - Re-enchantment design: reintroduce narrative, craft, or ritual where the rationalized process has drained purpose.
Anchor fast decisions
Rationalization increases control by replacing situated judgment with procedures that can be applied without understanding the case. The same substitution removes the interpretive layer that carried meaning, because the procedure answers how without addressing why. People comply with indicators whose purpose they no longer hold, and the resulting sense of emptiness is not nostalgia but a real loss of the connection between action and significance. Re-enchantment attempts to restore that connection without abandoning technical competence.
