CORE DEFINITION
A set of underlying rules that unconsciously determine how knowledge is produced and recognized in a particular period (e.g., Renaissance, Classical Age, Modernity). It is as invisible as air, but it dictates what people of that era could think and what counted as truth.

The operating system of thought. We think we are thinking freely, but in fact we are just running the operating system of our current era (e.g., scientific positivism). Understanding the episteme of different eras allows us to step out of the arrogance of our own truth and understand why people in the past thought the way they did.
Anchor fast decisions
Foucault proposed that each historical period has an episteme, an unconscious epistemic framework that defines the underlying rules of what counts as knowledge, truth, and how to verify it. It acts like an operating system, giving contemporaries a shared invisible framework of thought.
