Critical Period
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A brief window period early in biological development. During this time, the nervous system is extremely sensitive to specific environmental stimuli (e.g., language learning, visual development). Once this window is missed, related skills cannot be acquired, or are extremely difficult to acquire.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The irreversibility of timing. Whether learning skills, shaping character, or building intimate relationships, there are windows that "expire and wait for no one." Do not assume everything can be "made up later"; some shaping must be completed within a specific time window.
Anchor fast decisions
In early development, there is a brief window of extreme sensitivity to specific stimuli, during which neural plasticity is high and related abilities are easily acquired; after the window closes, neural pathways become fixed, and abilities become extremely difficult to acquire. The mechanism involves experience-dependent synaptic pruning and sensitive-period gene expression.
