Reference Group
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A group that an individual uses as a frame of reference when evaluating themselves or setting behavioral standards. This group may not be the group you belong to (e.g., you are in a blue-collar group, but your reference is white-collar).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
The coordinate of desire and pain. A person's happiness does not depend on absolute level, but on the distance from the reference group. If you feel pain, it is often because you have chosen the wrong reference frame (e.g., comparing yourself to Elon Musk right after graduation). The fastest way to change your mindset is to switch reference groups.
Anchor fast decisions
The social group that an individual uses as a reference when forming attitudes and evaluating themselves. It may be a membership group or a group they aspire to or reject. It influences behavior and self-evaluation through norms and comparisons.
