Omniopticon

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
The omniopticon inverts Jeremy Bentham's panopticon, in which a few guards watch many prisoners. In an omniopticon the many watch the many: every participant is at once an observer and the observed, and through likes, reports, and public pile-ons a decentralized high-pressure discipline is maintained. The oppression runs sideways instead of downward, from peers rather than from the top. To stay safe, people perform conformity more aggressively than the norm requires, which is why the structure reliably intensifies polarization.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Structure check: Ask whether pressure is coming from a central authority or from sideways peer surveillance. - Performance audit: Notice when you express a view to signal conformity rather than because you hold it. - Quiet space: Keep some sphere of life outside the watched arena so discipline cannot reach everything.
Anchor fast decisions
Visibility used to be asymmetric, with the watcher hidden and the watched exposed; now exposure is universal, so each person polices the others while being policed. Because judgment arrives from peers whose approval is needed, the cheapest defense is to perform the norm before anyone accuses you, and to perform it harder than the norm demands. Competitive conformity then shifts the average opinion faster than any central order could.
