Kirchhoff's Laws
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
1. Current Law (KCL): The current entering any node equals the current leaving that node (conservation of matter); 2. Voltage Law (KVL): Along any closed loop, the algebraic sum of voltage rises and drops is zero (conservation of energy).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Conservation of network flow. When analyzing flows of funds, information, or people, nodes (individuals/departments) cannot create or destroy flow out of nothing. If someone claims "zero input, high output," they must be violating Kirchhoff's laws. Check where the leak is, or where energy is being stolen.
Anchor fast decisions
KCL (node current conservation) means inflow equals outflow; KVL (loop voltage conservation) means the algebraic sum of rises and drops is zero. Essentially, it is the expression of conservation of flow and energy in different networks.
