Trade-off
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
"There are no solutions, only trade-offs." (Thomas Sowell). In any complex system, due to limited resources and physical constraints, optimizing one metric (such as speed) inevitably harms another (such as accuracy or cost). There is no omnipotent perfection, only compromises across different dimensions.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
An adult's worldview. When you hear "both... and...", be vigilant. Identifying and quantifying the underlying trade-off is the starting point of all rational decisions. All advantages, in another scenario, are costs.
Anchor fast decisions
Resources (time, money, attention) are limited and goals often conflict; improving one dimension often comes at the expense of another, which is the essence of constrained optimization. A better solution usually does not lie in "having it all," but in rebalancing on the Pareto frontier.
