Hyperreality
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Signs and simulations (the map) replace reality (the territory), even becoming more "real" than reality. For example, Disneyland is more American than America; retouched photos are more real than real people. We live in simulacra, unable to distinguish the real from the simulation.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
An existential framework for the media age. In the era of social media and AI, we no longer consume the original "object" but processed "signs." Understanding hyperreality can free us from the anxiety of perfection (which is simulated).
Anchor fast decisions
Hyperreality, proposed by Baudrillard, refers to the process where signs and simulacra replace references to reality, and people live in models that are more "real" than reality but have no original (e.g., theme parks, media events). The boundary between the real and the simulation dissolves.
