Persistence of Vision
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When the human eye views an object, after the image disappears, the impression of the image on the optic nerve is retained for about 0.1-0.4 seconds. Utilizing this characteristic, rapidly playing a series of static images creates the illusion of continuous motion in the brain (as in movies).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Use cognitive lag to construct continuity. Reality is often discrete and fragmented (e.g., intermittent efforts, fragmented information). As long as your output frequency is high enough (exceeding the threshold of persistence of vision), in the eyes of others, you can present a coherent, stable, and dynamic "persona" or "trend".
Anchor fast decisions
The image is briefly retained after the stimulus disappears, causing discrete frames to be perceived as continuous motion; this is the basis of cinema.
