Experimenter's Regress

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Experimenter's regress describes the circularity that appears at the frontier of science: to know whether an apparatus is reliable you need a correct result, but to know the correct result you need a reliable apparatus. Because no independent gold standard exists for a genuinely new phenomenon, researchers cannot distinguish no signal from a broken detector. The loop can only be broken through social negotiation, as the community converges on a shared belief through discussion rather than logic alone.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Map validation loops: name which unknown must be settled before your test can be trusted. - Break circularity: add independent measurement methods that fail in different ways. - Judge frontier claims: treat early results as provisional until a community of practice converges.
Anchor fast decisions
When a phenomenon is new, the instrument and the phenomenon are defined by each other, so no external check exists. Every failed detection can be explained either as absence of the effect or as instrument error, which makes the two hypotheses empirically indistinguishable. The loop closes only when enough researchers, calibrations, and replications accumulate that the community stops treating one branch as live.
