Category Error / Category Mistake
Updated 2026-08-02
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Named by Gilbert Ryle in The Concept of Mind. A category error occurs when a property appropriate to one logical type is attributed to something of another type, as in asking where the university is after being shown its libraries and departments. Ryle used the idea to argue that mental states are not a separate kind of substance but a different way of describing the same person.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Check the type: ask what kind of thing the subject is before attributing a property to it - Depersonify the claim: replace statements that an organization wants or believes with statements about its people - Separate whole from parts: ask whether the property belongs to the aggregate or to its members
Anchor fast decisions
Words carry implicit expectations about the logical type of what they apply to, and applying them across types produces sentences that appear meaningful but have no possible verification. The error survives because the sentence is grammatically well-formed, so nothing in the phrasing signals the mismatch. Detecting it requires asking what kind of thing could have the property at all.
