Haldane's Rule
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When two different species hybridize, if one sex of the hybrid offspring is sterile or inviable, that sex is typically the heterogametic sex (e.g., XY males or ZW females).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Reveals the sex-specific nature of system incompatibility. In cross-cultural or cross-system integration, certain "sexes" (roles, functions) may be more likely to become victims of "hybrid sterility," suggesting that we should pay special attention to these fragile links during integration.
Anchor fast decisions
Haldane's rule states that when two different species hybridize, if one sex of the offspring is sterile or missing, that sex is usually the heterogametic sex (e.g., XY males).
