Promotion Focus

INTRODUCTION

CORE DEFINITION
One of two orientations in regulatory focus theory, proposed by E. Tory Higgins. Promotion focus governs the pursuit of ideals, wishes, and aspirations, and makes people sensitive to the presence or absence of gains. It produces eager strategies that favor hitting hits and accepting false alarms, with joy on success and dejection on failure. Promotion focus is associated with creativity, exploration, and openness to change, and is contrasted with prevention focus, which governs duties and safety.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Frame messages: describe what someone can gain rather than what they might lose - Pick the mode: deliberately activate promotion focus for exploration, innovation, and growth work - Match incentives: reward achieved gains generously instead of penalizing people for missed obligations
Anchor fast decisions
Promotion focus makes gains salient, which raises the perceived value of acting and lowers the perceived cost of a failed attempt. That asymmetry supports eager strategies: trying more options and tolerating false positives, because a missed opportunity is the sharper loss. The resulting exploratory behavior raises the odds of creative discovery, at the price of more errors along the way.
