CORE DEFINITION

Attempts to transcend the binary opposition between 'structural determinism' and 'individual agency'. It holds that structure (rules and resources) is both the medium and the outcome of human action. People are shaped by structure, but they also continuously reshape structure through their actions. Scaffolding role: Provides a dynamic view of society. In organizational change or reflection on personal destiny, it negates both 'complete helplessness' and 'complete free will', advocating that we create rules within constraints.

Giddens' structuration theory posits that structure (rules and resources) is both the medium and the outcome of action, breaking the binary opposition between 'structure determines people' and 'people are completely free'.
