INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

Drawn from Viktor Frankl's logotherapy and from his account of surviving the concentration camps, and later echoed in Stephen Covey's work on proactivity. Frankl held that even when external circumstances are stripped away entirely, a person retains the capacity to choose their attitude toward those circumstances. Between what happens and how we answer it there is an interval that is not mechanically determined. That interval is where agency operates, and widening it deliberately converts automatic reaction into considered response. Frankl's claim is empirical as well as ethical: he reported observing this freedom in the camps.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Emotional pause: insert a deliberate delay before answering a provocation so the reaction is chosen rather than triggered. - Response rehearsal: decide in advance how you will act when a predictable provocation arrives. - Agency reminder: when circumstances feel fully determined, locate the one thing still under your control, your stance.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Immediate reactions are routed through fast automatic appraisal, which is efficient for physical threats and costly in social ones. A deliberate pause allows slower deliberate processing to come online, and that processing can reappraise the meaning of the event before any behavior is emitted. Because the appraisal rather than the event drives the response, changing the appraisal changes the outcome. The gap is simply the window in which reappraisal is still possible.
