The Platinum Rule
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-28
CORE DEFINITION
A rule of conduct that goes beyond the Golden Rule and the Silver Rule: treat others as they wish to be treated, not as you yourself would wish to be treated. It assumes that people differ in what they want, so genuine respect means understanding and satisfying the other person's particular preferences rather than projecting your own. Its scaffold function is raising empathy to a higher level: the fact that you like spicy food does not mean the other person does.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Empathy upgrade: treat others by their own preferences, not by what you yourself would want. - Avoid projection: your taste for spicy food does not mean the other person shares it. - Real respect: understand and satisfy the other person's particular preferences.
Anchor fast decisions
The Platinum Rule is an upgrade of the Golden Rule: instead of treating others as you wish to be treated, treat them as they wish to be treated—emphasizing differentiated empathy.
