Reverse Brainstorming

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A variant of brainstorming in which the group attacks the inverse question, asking how to guarantee failure, destroy customer satisfaction, or make the situation worse, and then reverses each answer into a constructive action. The technique was developed by creativity practitioners building on Osborn's work and is widely used in quality management and design. Its constraint is that it works best on problems with a clear failure state; for open-ended exploration with no defined failure, the inversion produces little. Inverted output still requires evaluation, since not every reversal is feasible.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Blind Spot Scan: surface failure causes that forward-looking optimism keeps out of the room. - Stuck Problem Unlock: reframe a stalled question as its opposite to restart discussion. - Risk Register Feed: turn each imagined disaster into a concrete preventive control.
Anchor fast decisions
Defining success is abstract and invites agreement, while defining failure is concrete and invites specificity, because people recognize problems faster than they recognize solutions. Generating failure modes also lowers the social cost of speaking, since nobody has to defend a bad idea. Once the failure list exists, inversion converts each item into a testable requirement, and the list itself is already a risk register. The shift in framing is what breaks fixation on a solution that has not been working.
