Language-game
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The meaning of language lies not in what it refers to, but in its use within specific social activities (games). Just like the "horse" in chess, its meaning is entirely determined by the rules of its movement. Different circles (science, religion, art) play different language games.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Contextual relativism. Explains why cross-domain communication is difficult. Don't ask "What is the definition of this word?" but "How is this word used in this circle?" If you don't understand the rules of the game, simply looking up the dictionary is useless.
Anchor fast decisions
The meaning of a word is determined by its "play" (the rules it follows) in use, not by the object it refers to. Different communities each have their own language games, and when crossing boundaries, the rules do not apply, hence communication difficulties.
