Cornered Resource

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A cornered resource is preferential or exclusive access to a scarce input that competitors need: a patent, a license, a top team, a prime location, or a mineral deposit. Popularized in Hamilton Helmer's Seven Powers, it works when the resource is both valuable in use and hard to replicate, so the holder earns returns without having to outcompete rivals in the market itself.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Pre-War Positioning: ask which input rivals need before you fight them on price or product. - Bottleneck Hunting: locate the single resource that gates the entire value chain. - Barrier Conversion: turn exclusive access into a durable advantage others cannot replicate.
Anchor fast decisions
If the input is necessary and available to only one firm, every competitor faces an entry barrier it cannot buy past. The holder earns returns without matching rivals on product or price, because the constraint sits upstream of competition. The barrier lasts as long as the resource stays scarce and irreplaceable.
