Second Strike Capability
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
The ability to survive a devastating enemy first strike and still possess sufficient strength to launch a devastating retaliation. This is the cornerstone of maintaining the peace of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Absolute trump card. In a game, if you die from a single hit, no one will respect you. You must demonstrate a retaliatory capability that says, 'Even if I die, you won't survive either' (e.g., submarines/backup data). This capability is not for use; it is to deter the opponent from acting.
Anchor fast decisions
Retain the ability to retaliate/survive after a first strike, emphasizing redundancy and resilience rather than single-optimal performance; it is survivability design.
