Smart Power
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The combination of hard power (military, economic sanctions) and soft power (culture, values). It involves flexibly applying hard and soft means to achieve goals by assessing the situation.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Mixed strategy. A single means often has limitations. In management, both KPI and bonuses (hard power) to constrain employees, and vision and care (soft power) to inspire employees are indispensable.
Anchor fast decisions
Hard power (coercion/inducement) and soft power (attraction/assimilation) are not mutually exclusive but are two ends of a continuum; whether goals are achieved depends on matching the audience and context—sometimes deterrence works, sometimes inspiration is more cost-effective.
