Correspondence Principle
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Niels Bohr, any new theory (such as quantum mechanics) must, within the domain where the old theory (such as classical mechanics) applies, yield predictions consistent with the old theory. That is, the new theory must contain the old theory as a special case.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Theory compatibility check. When learning new knowledge or innovating, it reminds us that "subversion" is not complete overthrow, but rather inclusion and transcendence of existing truths. If a new model cannot explain phenomena that the old model already explains well, it is suspect.
Anchor fast decisions
Within the valid boundary of the old theory, the new theory must reduce to the old theory, meaning their predictions agree; the old theory is an approximation of the new theory under specific limits, ensuring knowledge inheritance rather than rupture.
