Hungry but No Desire to Eat
Updated 2026-08-02
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A pattern in traditional Chinese medicine. The patient feels hungry but does not want to eat, or is full after two bites. The mechanism is empty heat in the stomach, which produces the sensation of hunger, combined with deficient stomach yin or weak stomach qi, which removes the capacity to receive and transform food, like a stove with a fire but a broken grate. It appears in Jueyin patterns and in stomach yin deficiency and is treated by nourishing yin and clearing heat, for example with Mume Pill or Ophiopogon decoction.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Signal versus capacity: separate a demand signal from the ability to process what the demand asks for. - Load check: stop pushing input into a system whose processing capacity has already failed. - Capability first: rebuild capacity instead of satisfying the surface appetite.
Anchor fast decisions
The drive signal and the execution capacity come from different subsystems and can fail independently. When the signal stays loud while capacity collapses, adding more input produces overload rather than output, so the effective intervention is restoring capacity, not amplifying the signal.
