Second-Order Cybernetics

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A development in cybernetics associated with Heinz von Foerster and the Macy conferences tradition. First-order cybernetics studies observed systems as though the observer stood outside them. Second-order cybernetics puts the observer inside the system and treats observation, description, and measurement as interventions that alter the observed. Objectivity becomes a stance that must be accounted for rather than a vantage point that can simply be occupied. The shift has been applied to management, family therapy, and social research.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Reflexive management: treat your own reviews and announcements as inputs that change the system. - Measurement audit: ask how the act of measuring alters what is being measured. - Position disclosure: state your standpoint instead of claiming neutrality.
Anchor fast decisions
If the observer is part of the system, then any measurement or intervention feeds back into it and changes the conditions that produced the reading. Ignoring this loop yields descriptions that are already obsolete, while including the observer turns feedback into a variable that can be steered.
